Letter from the President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA

Dear Readers,

2020 was a difficult year for businesses in the light of the pandemic. Our operational agility in this context massively contributed to Poland’s energy security and safe working conditions for our employees. We also kept in mind those who needed help the most during the pandemic.

We provided financial support to 17 hospitals in the first month of the pandemic alone, and continued this throughout the year. Overall in 2020 we donated PLN 6.7 million to the fight against COVID-19. As PGE Group, we also became involved in supporting local businesses by initiating the nationwide social campaign “Polish – I’m buying it!” But most importantly we passed the exam on being responsible for Poland’s energy security. Our employees exhibited great responsibility and engagement in performing their work, and continue to do so. All of this so that the electricity and heat needed every day at our jobs, schools, hospitals and – most importantly – homes is never in short supply.

At the same time, we were making decisions on the shape of our on-going sustainable energy transition. In October 2020, we unveiled PGE Group’s new business strategy. Our goal is climate neutrality and 100% of green energy to customers by 2050. We are beginning to transition regions traditionally related to mining and the conventional generation of electricity. A concept for transitioning the Bełchatów region was developed, and we came up with a range of transition projects for Turów. The process of changes in both of these regions is based on investments in renewable energy sources. An extensive retraining program for PGE Group employees toward the development of low- and zero-emission energy is an important element of that process.

The market confirms that we are making good on our commitments. In the 2020 Ranking of Responsible Businesses, PGE Group was named, for the third time, as leader of responsible business in the fuel, energy and mining industries and placed fifth in the overall ranking. As PGE Group, we are taking action in each of the 17 SDG areas. PGE Group’s new strategy names four of them that are of special importance to us. These are:

  • Goal 7. Affordable and clean energy
  • Goal 11. Sustainable cities and communities
  • Goal 12. Responsible consumption and production
  • Goal 13. Climate action

I hope that you will enjoy reading our report, and I wish to thank PGE Group’s employees for their engagement in the corporate social responsibility area – without you this report would not have been possible.
